Reimagining 1920s Fashion with AI: A Thai Perspective

I’m particularly excited to share involves reimagining the iconic styles of the British television series Downton Abbey in a Thai context. Downton Abbey, set in the early 20th century, chronicles the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their staff. Its costume design is celebrated for showcasing the transition from Edwardian opulence to the sleek, modern lines of the 1920s.

The fashion of the 1920s holds a timeless charm, capturing an era of transformation, elegance, and innovation. As a costume designer, I’ve always been inspired by how this iconic decade merged simplicity with sophistication. Using AI, I’ve been able to create authentic designs from this period, tailored for both Western and Thai contexts. My AI model, trained extensively on historical data from the reign of King Rama VII, has become an invaluable tool in my creative process.

One project I’m particularly excited to share involves reimagining the iconic styles of the British television series Downton Abbey in a Thai context. Downton Abbey, set in the early 20th century, chronicles the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their staff. Its costume design is celebrated for showcasing the transition from Edwardian opulence to the sleek, modern lines of the 1920s.

The series’ three leading ladies—Mary, Edith, and Rose—each have distinct styles. Mary’s wardrobe is elegant and structured, reflecting her confidence and sophistication. Edith’s attire features soft, romantic details, often in pastel tones with delicate embroidery. Rose’s youthful and daring outfits embrace the playful spirit of flapper fashion. Together, their costumes are a stunning representation of 1920s Western elegance.

Using these designs as inspiration, I trained my AI model to adapt them for a Thai setting. The results have been extraordinary. The AI preserved the glamour of the original designs while infusing them with a distinctly Thai identity. For example, where Western flapper dresses might feature sequins and Art Deco patterns, their Thai counterparts incorporate traditional motifs, handwoven silk, and draped silhouettes reminiscent of Thai royal attire from the era. Accessories like tiaras and headbands were reinterpreted with Thai-inspired designs, such as floral garlands and intricately crafted gold ornaments.

However, creating these designs isn’t as simple as pressing a button. My process began with sourcing original digital images from the National Archives of Thailand, primarily glass plate negatives from the early 20th century. These negatives, known for their incredible detail and quality, provided a rich dataset. Initially, I started with around 50 images. Since then, I’ve expanded my dataset to 100 fully restored and colourised images, ensuring a more comprehensive representation of the era.

To make these images usable, I used AI applications to colourise the black-and-white photographs, but the results were far from perfect. Each image required extensive manual editing and enhancement to achieve lifelike and historically accurate results. It was a long and meticulous process, but the effort was worth it to ensure authenticity. These 100 images now form the foundation of my AI model, allowing me to generate a vast range of designs inspired by both Western and Thai aesthetics of the 1920s.

The AI has become a powerful tool for generating variations of designs, streamlining the workflow, and saving countless hours compared to manually sketching every concept. The creative process didn’t stop there—each design was reviewed, corrected, and refined to ensure it aligned with my vision. AI is not a replacement for designers; it’s a tool that enhances our ability to create.

There’s often a misconception that using AI diminishes the role of the designer. I believe the opposite is true. AI relies entirely on the dataset it is trained on, and in my case, this dataset was built through extensive research, colourisation, and preparation. The AI works within the framework I’ve created, reflecting my input and expertise. It’s akin to using a paintbrush or sewing machine—tools that assist the artist but don’t define the art.

Imagine Downton Abbey in a Thai version, set in the 1920s. The costumes would reflect the elegance of the period while celebrating the unique cultural identity of Siam. Thanks to AI, designing such elaborate wardrobes has become more efficient and imaginative. I understand why some film studios hesitate to allow costume designers to use AI, often due to concerns about copyright. But when designers use their own datasets and control the creative process, the output is entirely their own—just as a painting belongs to the artist, not the company that makes the paint.

Below are examples of my work, featuring side-by-side comparisons of Western-inspired designs and their Thai counterparts. These creations demonstrate the power of AI to merge cultural heritage with the glamour of a bygone era, offering endless possibilities for costume design in film and television.

By embracing AI as part of the creative process, we’re not losing the essence of design—we’re expanding it. With proper training, preparation, and thoughtful use, AI becomes a powerful ally in bringing our visions to life.
